Program Overview

Program Description:
The program offers Spanish Language and Culture courses for several majors. Students must register for a two-course sequence and be prepared to provide services to the burgeoning Hispanic population to help them acquire the Spanish language skills and cultural understanding necessary.

The Mexico Program will last an academic semester and is designed for students in the following majors: Nursing and Health Care, Social Work and Criminal Justice, Police Studies, Corrections and Juvenile Justice. No prior Spanish required.

Students attend classes five days a week, and participate in weekly excursions to places of cultural interest. There will be one open weekend for travel.
Setting Description:
The program is based in the beautiful colonial city of Merida. Capital of the Yucatan, Merida is a very beautiful and safe city that is home to a number of American university study abroad programs. (Merida received the "Banner of Peace" from the United Nations). Both quaint and modern, Merida has great shops and markets (jewelry, hammocks, and the classic Guayabera shirt), cheap eats and fine cuisine, festivals, lively music ("Noche Mexicana" every Saturday), and lovely universities.
