Program Overview

Program Description:
Open to students of all majors, the KIIS Ecuador program focuses on the biological and social sciences. Participants visit three diverse ecosystems - tropical rainforest, highland cloud forest, and the alpine zones of the Andes around the colonial gem of Quito, capital and cultural hearth of Ecuador.

The Ecuador program will last one month. Students will participate in activities associated with their selected courses as well as visit a number of cultural, historical and ecological sites in Quito, Cuenca, Ba os, Otavalo, the Amazon, the pacific coast and the Cloud Forest.

There are no language requirements for participation in the program. Credit will be awarded by Western Kentucky University and will automatically be transferred to the student's home institution.
Setting Description:
Ecuador is flanked by the coastal plains of the Pacific to the west and by the steamy tropical forests of the Amazon basin to the east. The program culminates with an optional week long extension to the Galapagos Islands. While traveling throughout Ecuador, students stay at eco-friendly hotels and lodges where possible.
