Program Description:

Objective of the Programme: The program focuses on combining the theoretical and practical skills in the area of Femtosecond and Terahertz Optics, Quantum Informatics and Nano- and Biophotonics.

Details of the educational program:

For ITMO students:

Two-year program (1st at ITMO, 2nd at UR),

120 ECTS credits in total

Four study semesters: 40 ECTS (two semesters at ITMO) + 60 ECTS (two semesters at UR)

Thesis evaluation by UR 10 ECTS

Final examination at ITMO: 3 ECTS

Thesis evaluation by ITMO: 7 ECTS

Training methods:

Lectures, case studies, company visits, group work, laboratory work, scientific research work

Program components:

Required courses + elective courses + internship + scientific research work + final thesis presentation and evaluation.

Founded in 1929 as the first Optics education program in the United States of America by a grant from Kodak and Bausch and Lomb, The Institute of Optics is an academic department in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at The University of Rochester. The purpose of The Institute of Optics is to educate the next generation of leaders in the field of Optics.

The mission of The Institute of Optics is to provide the finest educational and research experience in Optical Physics, Applied Optics and Optical Engineering. The Institute grants undergraduate, masters and PhD degrees in Optics.

Faculty and Staff at The Institute of Optics are fully dedicated to providing a challenging and enjoyable educational experience in the broad field of Optics, through rigorous academic instruction, laboratory exercises, informal events, and networking.

Admission requirements

 

A completed academic Bachelor's degree (or first cycle degree) in the fields of optics, photonics or optical engineering with good/excellent grades. Upper-intermediate level of English.

Admission tests

Basic knowledge of research methodology. This can be shown by a relevant taken course or accepted seminar or by one or more international scientific publications.

Master of science (MSc) from ITMO in one of three majors:

-     Optical and quantum technology of transmission, storage and treatment of information;

-     Quantum Informatics;

-     Biophotonics.

Tuition fees - 170 000 RUR for 1 year + tuition fees at UR if chosen by the applicant to attend
