Stirling is one of Scotland's most historic cities, which many major battles for Scottish independence took place in and around. Once the capital of Scotland, the city is surrounded by a large medieval fortress now mixed in with a contemporary, university town. Lush and green, Stirling is often called "The Gateway to the Highlands." The city is extremely student-oriented, pedestrian friendly, and offers all of the amenities of a large cosmopolitan city. The once majestic medieval castle situated in the heart of the city now serves as a local concert and arts venue. This combination between old and new gives the city a sort of magical feel that visitors will always remember. The city itself sits atop rolling hills and situated near a beautiful loch inhabited with local wildlife. It is also only about 45 minutes by train from Glasgow or Edinburgh giving students easy access to both cities for a day of exploration.

Setting Description:
The University of Stirling is stunning campus situated in the heart of Scotland. The Guardian University Guide summed it up nicely when it asked, "Where else can you study on the shores of loch, by an 18th century castle, beneath rolling hills?" Beyond the beautiful location, the university is known for its quality of teaching, excellent research and friendly atmosphere. It was selected as the Scottish University of the Year in 2009/10 and is consistently ranked high in student satisfaction. It was also named Scotland's University for Sporting Excellence with it's large and very modern sporting facilities. Many of the national teams right in Stirling to get them prepared for the athletic season. In keeping with the Scottish tradition in golf, the university has it's own 9 hole golf course and driving range with other 5 star rated facilities located around the campus.
