ISA founded its first study abroad site in Salamanca, Spain, in 1987. Salamanca (pop. 156,000) is described by many as the ideal study abroad location because of the outstanding academic possibilities, assorted cultural opportunities, and proximity to the capital city of Madrid. It is one of the most magnificent renaissance cities in all of Europe.
The Universidad de Salamanca, founded by Alfonso IX of Leon in 1218, is the oldest and most prestigious university in Spain. During the 15th and 16th centuries, it became one of the most advanced learning centers in the world.Students who would like to study abroad for a semester or trimester in Salamanca have several options. There are a variety of programs that cater to students at the beginning, intermediate, advanced, and superior Spanish language levels. - Setting Description:
- The newer ISA Salamanca office is located within a five-minute walk from the Universidad de Salamanca and within ten minutes from the Plaza Mayor. The office is located near the heart of historic Salamanca with easy access to cafés and local shops. A walk around the center of the city is a tour past historic architecure and typical Spanish street scenes. The office houses a meeting/study area, resident director offices, and computer terminals with internet access. During normal office hours (Mon-Fri, 10am-2pm; Mon-Thur, 4-8pm; Fri, 4-6pm), students may visit the office to use the internet, receive tutoring, find out about upcoming excursions and activities, utilize various travel and academic resources, or simply visit with the ISA staff.
