Program Description:

ISDSI's programs are designed to get students out of the traditional classroom and learning hands-on about sustainability and the relationship between different people groups and the environment they live in. ISDSI's programs are academically challenging, immerse students in a variety of vibrant local cultures, and allow for students to spend the majority of their time in the expedition field. Field courses are developed in collaboration with local community leaders, and with courses combining both social and natural science concepts, assignments include everything from a coral reef survey to ethnographic research.

Go beyond the traditional classroom and challenge yourself intellectually, emotionally and often physically in the expedition field while learning hands-on about sustainability and the link between people and the environment they live in. Immerse yourself in local culture, live with host-families and learn from local community experts. Backpack on remote forest trails with ethnic Karen people while studying indigenous forest management. Work on organic farms while learning about agroecosystems; and sea kayak in Southern Thailand to learn about mangrove conservation, reefs and fishing communities. The fee includes: tuition, program related meals, housing, in-country books/readers, program related travel, and a monthly cash stipend for food & local transportation. By ISDSI charging a comprehensive fee, your existing scholarship and financial aid can be applied to tuition and cost-of-living while studying at ISDSI.

Setting Description:

Thailand's mountains, forests, coasts and ocean are the backdrop to ISDSI's program! You will start by spending time in the culturally-rich and vibrant city of Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand. Surrounded by beautiful mountains, Chiang Mai is only the starting point to your adventure of a lifetime. With the field as your classroom, you will backpack between remote hill tribe villages in Northern Thailand, spend time with families practicing organic farming in small villages, and kayak around the islands in Southern Thailand.
