Program Overview

Program Description:

This course is designed as a practical approach to the teaching of STEAM in an international context.  It offers an interdisciplinary study of the Spanish civilization and culture through the application of Virtual & Augmented Reality technologies.

The aim of this course is to provide an overview of the history and development of science and technology in Spain with a focus on the social and political changes in 18th Century Spain. Special attention will be placed on the development of new technological industries and sites such as the Royal Glass Factory developed in La Granja. This factory represented one of the most important industrial centers in all of Europe during the Enlightenment. An in-depth study of the factory and its techniques will allow students to learn about the life, society, culture, and businesses of the new dynasty in Spain. In addition, students will have the opportunity to explore new means of dialogue between the past and present history and technology of Spain by developing a virtual reality project.

Classroom sessions will be combined with onsite assignments where students will create their own VR project exploring a particular social or historical aspect of the site. Students will work in small groups supervised by arts and technology experts.
