Program Description:
Study digital magazine publishing and create a multimedia magazine for the iPad during this summer journalism course in the charming city of Perpignan in the South of France. Students will study multimedia reporting skills and then go into the community, with the help of interpreters when needed, to report on the life and culture of the city. The course includes 30 hours of French language instruction (students will be divided into beginner and intermediate groups) from a respected French language academy. The program is open to English-speaking students from all schools and countries. Students will get 3 transferable, upper-division journalism credits from San Francisco State University.

This program is designed to prepare students for the complex demands of 21st century global media. Students will work on the cutting edge of journalism, producing a digital multimedia magazine for the iPad. In addition they will gain experience reporting in a foreign country and working with an interpreter.
Setting Description:
Perpignan’s strategic location near the France-Spain border has given the city a unique character. More Catalan than French, this charming city in the foothills of the Pyrenees comes alive in the summer with a series of festivals and celebrations that bring people out into the streets. The pedestrian-friendly old city has charming winding streets and sidewalk cafes. Students will have two three-day weekends free to explore the city or travel independently to Barcelona, Paris or other parts of France or Spain.
Cost:
$4,995 plus airfare. Cost includes 3 transferable journalism credits from San Francisco State University; French language instruction; housing in a modern hotel; welcome and farewell dinners; insurance; use of interpreters for reporting when needed.
