Program Overview

Program Description:
Whether as part of a mobile team on the ground, or assisting in a home for vulnerable children or the elderly, being on a healthcare project will provide volunteers with the opportunity of a lifetime to make a positive impact on the health and wellness of African communities. Currently our medical programs are for volunteers who are working in, or thinking of working in the medical field; or who are passionate about helping others through healthcare. We are in the process of redeveloping these programs to provide for student electives and qualified healthcare placements where they are most needed.

Clinics Clinics in kenya battle with serious shortages of staff and basic medical equipment. The help of volunteers is greatly appreciated by the nurses in the clinics, as their assistance with tasks, such as filing of patient records, allows the staff to more quickly see and treat the vast numbers of people depending on the clinics for healthcare. Volunteers have the opportunity to observe patient care being provided by local staff in several Livingstone clinics, which provides valuable insight into healthcare services in Kenya. The clinics have several departments, including outpatients for adults and children, HIV and TB services, pharmacy and maternity.

This program will enable the local people to access to medical treatment through volunteers.
Setting Description:
The aim of Home Based Care (HBC) is providing comfort, education and treatment adherence advice to members of the community with little to no access to clinics or hospitals. Listening to patient’s stories with an empathetic ear is an invaluable way to provide comfort and support as a volunteer. Talking to patients about the importance of hygiene, a healthy diet and exercise is often an important part of this healthcare service, as is providing information about the vital importance of adhering to medication regimes.
