Program Description:

Our Intensive Japanese lessons have small classes and a maximum of 8 students, with a balanced focus on conversation, reading and writing. We specialize in short term stays and our extracurricular activities are structured for students to make the most of their time in Japan. In our summer course we offer a variety of culture experience lessons, so everyone will find something they are interested in. We pride ourselves in providing our students a very warm and relaxed environment to learn Japanese and many opportunities to meet local people!

The Seasonal Courses take our standard 15 Japanese lessons per week and add 2 traditional culture experiences per week for six weeks. Our students have the chance to experience a variety of Japanese culture, such as trying on kimono, making sushi, and tea ceremonies. Japanese volunteers participate in many of these events, giving students the opportunity to improve their Japanese in a setting other than the classroom and to make friends and experience Japan from the inside, not just as a tourist.

Students also have the opportunity to attend our 3 weekly optional activities to enjoy all that Hokkaido has to offer, such as rafting in the summer, or a world-famous snow festival in the winter! Join us any time of the year and enjoy learning Japanese in the beautiful city of Sapporo!

Setting Description:

Sapporo is one of the largest cities in Japan, but within a short drive or train ride you can find incredibly stunning places to enjoy breathtaking nature. Hokkaido doesn’t have a rainy season, and the summer weather is warm and refreshing – perfect for enjoying summer-life here. The food in Hokkaido is great, the people are kind, and the combination of city and country life is beautiful. To help you enjoy all aspects of Sapporo, Hokkaido JaLS provide you with many after-school and weekend activities. Hokkaido JaLS has great access from both the Sapporo Station and Odori Station (five minutes on foot from both stations) and we are surrounded by many restaurants, shops and other tourist attractions.
