We specialize in short term stays and our extracurricular activities are structured for students to make the most of their time in Japan. In our summer course we offer a variety of culture experience lessons, so everyone will find something they are interested in. We pride ourselves in providing our students a very warm and relaxed environment to learn Japanese and many opportunities to meet local people!
The Seasonal Courses take our standard 15 Japanese lessons per week and add 2 traditional culture experiences per week for six weeks. Our students have the chance to experience a variety of Japanese culture, such as trying on kimono, making sushi, and tea ceremonies. Japanese volunteers participate in many of these events, giving students the opportunity to improve their Japanese in a setting other than the classroom and to make friends and experience Japan from the inside, not just as a tourist.
Students also have the opportunity to attend our 3 weekly optional activities to enjoy all that Hokkaido has to offer, such as rafting in the summer, or a world-famous snow festival in the winter! Join us any time of the year and enjoy learning Japanese in the beautiful city of Sapporo!

- A Week at JaLS09/04/19
I signed up for only a week because I was unsure what to expect. It was my first time in Hokkaido and the first time studying at JaLS. After my one week, I find JaLS--with its teaching method, the Sensei, and the supporting staff--to be excellent, and
I plan on coming back again. Among the JaLS' teachings that I find especially valuable is what they called "shadowing". It involves memorizing and reciting a set of short dialogues--dialogues, in the vernacular/casual form, involving situations that you're likely to encounter often. Now, when I speak to Japanese people, I use (with slight modifications) some of the sentences and phrases from those dialogues. I studied under three sensei during my week there. All were excellent. All were approachable and receptive to your questions--whether during class time or during break time. A final point that makes me want to return to JaLS is its support staff--your point persons for everything relating to JaLS. They've among the most friendly and helpful staff I've ever encountered. Sayakaさん, in particular made my stay in Hokkaido especially enjoyable. She helped me with suggesting what to do in Sapporo, finding a good maid cafe, directing me to the best Hokkaido ramen place, etc.. And she follows up! Go ahead and give JaLS a try. It's great!read moreBottom Line:Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
- Summer course09/21/18
I have been to JaLS (Sapporo) during the Summer 2018. I stayed only two weeks here but this school was really amazing. Teachers are very nice people and very helpful, I was in a beginner course (1 year of japanese) but the content was very adapted to
the level. I was in an apartment, it was really nice not far from the school (15 minutes by foot) and very well situated near Nijo Market and the city center! It have to say that the apartment and the school are very cheap if you compare to just booking an hotel for the same amount of time. It surprised me but don't worry everything was excellent! The only problem is that you won't want to leave this school and Japan ;)! I hope I will be able to go back to JaLS Sapporo and I wish the best to their team and to you if you decide to go there!read moreBottom Line:Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
- Growing Individually08/06/18
The JALS program is one of the few programs out there that has a very strong internationally environment. For one, the staff and students are open to helping other students to talk and grow as a person. One of the greatest experience for me was events
that help connect the international student with the locals in the area. I think that those kind of experiences are one of the rare great ones that have helped me grow as a person.read moreBottom Line:Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
