Program Overview

Program Description:

Hiram College's Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies is a unique and innovative program with classes meeting every other Saturday, a schedule designed to accomodate the working adult's hectic life.

The students take a carefully structured set of courses that culminates in an individual capstone project.  Working closely with an advisor each student designs a project meant to answer a question or solve a problem relevant to the student's particular area of interest, professional or personal.  In addition to examining in depth and making recommendations concerning a particular subject, the capstone process hones the student's research and project management skills.

The Master of Arts degree is highly practical education that teaches students how to approach complex issues from multiple perspectives and creatively solve problems when complete information may not be available.  It allows students to look for answers beyond a strict vocational focus and to think critically about root causes.  Students learn a process to analyze the context in which problems are addressed and decisions are made.  Embedded throughout the coursework is a focus on oral and written communication; understanding and appreciation for different cultures, diverse perspectives and experiences; developing skills in identifying and assessing information relevant to problems and decisions; encouraging creative thinking; developing the ability to bring a multiplicity of perspectives to problem solving and decision making; and understanding the value systems that underlie actions and decisions.
