Program Overview

Program Description:
Helikos is a theatre school where the actor, as both poet and creator. The aim of the school is to train artists capable of developing their own voice in an autonomous way. The physical and poetic practices of the terms include work on Lecoq based movement, mask and dramatic territories, an extensive and original devised writing from play course and innovative vocal training for the movement based actor/creator as well as martial arts and acrobatic play. Helikos offers both one and three year courses as well as workshops.

The first period is the awakening of the poetic potential of the body. It’s a rediscovery of the world and nature through the study of their movements. The second period is dedicated to the Mask, the first archetype of all theatrical languages. The third period focuses on the exploration of fundamental comic territories, following the question "why and how do we laugh?". Comedy is the search of the many ways in which characters, movement, space, tempo and writings can be unbalanced to provoke the fall of the audience into laughter.

As a professional training, it is meant for students who have the commitment to use the knowledge acquired in the training to create their own art. The original meaning of the word arte is “profession." The program is a deep artistic learning process and requires a strong commitment and excitement to work on-stage, and the deep desire to enter a process of self-discovery and personal growth off-stage. The poetic urge is the call to go on stage, and tell stories to the world, bringing all of oneself to the alchemical pot of theatre making. The students are storytellers who want to explore, unfold and refine their poetic voice in the field of theatre. Helikos cannot teach this urge: it's an intimate necessity of every artist.
