Program Overview

Program Description:
Hawai‘i Pacific University's Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree program offers the registered nurse the opportunity to advance his or her career as Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), and Acute Care NP, or with a Joint Degree of MSN/MBA. The successful graduate is qualified to sit for the national credentialing exam required for licensure. These tracks are also available as RN-to-MSN, eliminating at least one year of study as the BSN is not required. The Master of Science in Nursing degree program is designed to orient graduates to enhanced roles in primary and acute care as advanced practice nurses. The program includes those skills needed by nurses to succeed in the changing health care environment: enhanced critical thinking, assessment, problem solving, and communication skills. Through core courses, 630 practicum hours and a capstone course, graduate students gain a solid foundation in advanced nursing practice that also prepares them for the next academic step, either the DNP or a PhD. Practicum placements are arranged by the program with student preferences considered. The faculty who teach in the MSN program are not only experienced educators, they are also experienced advanced practice nurses. Classes are small and the faculty are always willing to provide students their individual attention. MSN/MBA students are not required to take the clinical preparation courses, so that the joint degree is only 48 credits. An RN-to MSN/MBA is also offered for those nurse administrators with an ADN and who have a bachelor’s degree in any other discipline. HPU maintains it’s “top military-friendly” designation as well as it’s designation as the Number 1 university for diversity in the nation.
