- 10-Month Japan Exchange06/12/16
My senior daughter is a week away from returning from her 10-month exchange through Greenheart Travel. For the entire exchange she attended Junten Junior/Senior High School, a private school, where she ended up in the academic track--an unusual experience
for most exchange students there. Perhaps it was because she was a senior who had successfully completed five AP classes through her local high school experience; regardless, this was a very humbling experience for her which resulted in a strong connection to her classmates. My daughter was very fortunate to have been placed with a wonderful family with whom she stayed for seven months. There, she was included in all aspects of the family's life, even running together to prepare for a 5K that they signed up for. The host father, in particular, took an interest in my daughter's Japanese heritage and invested quite a bit of time translating a family tree and even driving her to meet with a relative to further explore her family history. Her second homestay was not as positive but was, fortunately, only three months long. Greenheart, specifically Hope Pavich, maintained contact with me for the duration of my daughter's exchange. Hope even stepped in to help facilitate my daughter's delivery of a valedictorian speech to her graduating class, in absentia. Our relationship with Hope began months before her exchange started when we stopped in for a visit to the Chicago office while there on vacation from Arizona. Overall, I've been pleased with the Greenheart and their program though my daughter is pretty independent and had experienced Japan previously through family or school travel. Being a senior created some issues--not something I'd recommend, but it's what my daughter wanted. She'll return to enroll at Arizona State University and maintain her language proficiency by continuing to study the language. Thank you, Greenheart, for helping to organize this experience. It's been nice to watch her learn and grow a more international perspective of the world.
