- Program Description:
- Our Florence Summer Law Program provides an opportunity to study abroad in an ABA accredited program steeped in the commitment to social justice and international human rights.
Program Dates: May 22-June 17, 2016
Students will return in time for summer internships.
Students will be enrolled in the following courses:
Comparative Criminal Law: This course will compare the criminal justice system of the United States and Western Europe with a particular focus on Italy. The course will examine the roles, rights, and responsibilities of key participants, including law enforcement, prosecutors, defense counsel, judges, defendants, and victims. In addition, the course will emphasize several key procedural areas, including suppression of evidence, the right to trial by jury, the right to counsel, and sentencing.
International Human Rights: This course is designed as an introduction to the critical concepts in international human rights law in a concurrent historical and contemporary context. The ideological and practical formation of human rights law up to its current structures and legal decisions will be examined. The specific focus on current topics will be determined on an on-going basis throughout the session.
Additional group outings to Sienna and Fiesole.
- Setting Description:
- Classes are held in the university-owned villa located near the Piazza San Marco, just a short walk from the Duomo. The Monday through Thursday class schedule allows students the opportunity to explore the local environs of Tuscany such as historic Lucca, the towers of San Gimignano, the Cinque Terre beaches and hiking trails, or the Chianti wine country.
