Program Overview
- Program Description:
This program is designed for teens aged between 15 and 17 years old to explore historic Greece when they join a team of international volunteers conserving endangered loggerhead turtles. The program is located in Giannitsochori where the turtles nest on the white sand beaches. Our young volunteers record nesting activity and protect hatchlings from predators as they make their first journey to the ocean, making a real difference to the conservation of the population. Volunteering with GVI not only allows you to participate and make a meaningful impact while assisting disadvantaged communities or endangered ecosystems, but it also offers fantastic opportunities to travel and explore the local area. Throughout this project, our younger volunteers will have greater supervision, training, and world-class leaders in the field who have been chosen for their mix of relevant experience and ability to mentor and inspire young people.
- Setting Description:
- The project site is a 10 minute walk from the village of Giannitsochori, a small and traditional village in the municipality of Zacharo, southern Elis. It is situated in the narrow coastal plains along the Ionian Sea, 2 km north of the mouth of the river Neda, at the foot of the western extensions of the mountain Minthi. It is a known beach resort with amazing Greek historical ruins close by.
