Program Overview
- Program Description:
- Global Service Corps (GSC) is pleased to announce a number of unique volunteer and internship service-learning programs that are ideal for college students of various disciplines. A leader in international voluntarism since 1993, we offer short- and long-term volunteer and internship programs in Cambodia, Tanzania and Thailand. The focus of these programs ranges from global health to English education, Buddhist immersion, and sustainable agriculture and food security. Programs are offered from two weeks to six months or longer and college credit is available for any GSC experience. Visit globalservicecorps.org for more information on current programs, start dates and rates, and the application process.
Global Service Corps participants discover Cambodia by living, working and learning with Cambodian people in their own communities. Participants in the Orphanage Care Program join the staff of a residential children’s center for orphans affected by HIV in sharing their much-valued time, talents, and knowledge with the children or assisting them with their Sustainable Agriculture projects. Volunteers can also teach English or HIV/AIDS Prevention Education to Cambodian children in schools and youth centers throughout Phnom Penh. In the Buddhist Immersion Program, volunteers will experience the rich and vibrant Buddhist culture of Cambodia firsthand as they live in a monastery and teach English to the resident monks, nuns, and novices. The Integrated Program allows participants to combine two or more of these areas into one program.
Explore Africa through one of our programs in Tanzania, where GSC is a registered NGO and respected leader in the community. Tanzania volunteers can choose from programs in HIV/AIDS Prevention and Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security. Students with more time to spend can combine both of these areas of service in GSC’s Integrated Program. GSC also offers an International Health Program in Tanzania designed for pre-med and other students studying health-related subjects. This program includes community trainings in HIV/AIDS prevention as well as opportunities to shadow medical staff in local health care facilities. Longer Community Development Programs are also available and are especially suited for those interested in pursuing a career in international development.
In Thailand, volunteers have the opportunity to utilize their skills and abilities to teach English education to Thai children in primary and secondary schools. Participants in the Orphanage Program provide underprivileged Thai children the attention and support services they need. The Integrated Program option allows volunteers to combine these two areas into one program.
All participants begin their program with a five-day cultural orientation and training. Khmer/Swahili/Thai language lessons are included in the orientation as well as country-specific information and tours of the area. As part of the project training, volunteers will become prepared to transition into pre-arranged placements, where they will assist in implementing much needed services to the local communities.
Through Global Service Corps you will be able to engage in enriching service while learning new skills. Additionally, you will gain a unique cross-cultural perspective through living with a Tanzanian family, in a Cambodian or Thai urban or rural community, or in a Cambodian Buddhist monastery. Academic credit is available in all of our programs including specialized summer and semester programs in Tanzania and Cambodia.
- Setting Description:
- Cambodia: During the first week of orientation, participants will be housed in a local hotel/guesthouse in Phnom Penh. After orientation, you will either stay in a guesthouse or in your placement’s on-site accommodations (for the Orphanage Care and Buddhist Immersion Programs). All accommodations are shared with same-sex volunteers. Thailand: Volunteers are based in Singburi, Thailand with GSC’s partner organization. Participants stay in newly constructed group housing facilities in a beautiful rural setting, providing an opportunity to share experiences with other volunteers from around the world. A weekend tour of Bangkok is also included at the start of all Thailand programs. Tanzania: GSC volunteers are based in Arusha, Tanzania which is located at the base of Mt. Meru. On a clear day you get a fantastic view of Mt. Kilimanjaro. All participants live with a Tanzanian family in a nearby village, which is perhaps the most amazing cultural experience, providing memories to last a
