Program Overview

Program Description:
The Georgetown Summer Program in L'Aquila, Italy offers students an opportunity to combine intensive language and culture study with community based learning.

L'Aquila is struggling to recover from the 2009 earthquake that killed hundreds of people, displaced most of the inhabitants, and destroyed many historical buildings. The course "2009 and Beyond: Stories of Loss and Rebirth" focuses on the many publications that have explored this event from different vantage points - from the political to the artistic, from the sociological to the psychological. Students will deepen their understanding of the challenges faced by the town while working at the Mensa di Celestino, a center that provides meals and assistance to the local population, as well as housing and counseling for single mothers.

Setting Description:
L'Aquila allows for a variety of excursions, from the beaches of the Adriatic to the villages in the Apennines. In contrast to many cities in Italy, L'Aquila has been spared the mass tourism, and participants will enjoy meaningful opportunities for community based learning, cultural immersion, and intensive advanced-level language acquisition.
Cost:
Program fees include tuition, academic fees, housing in triple rooms, breakfast daily, program excursions, special welcoming and farewell dinners with the group, and health insurance. The program cost does not include transportation to/from L'Aquila and most meals.
