Program Overview

Program Description:
The McGhee Center for Eastern Mediterranean Studies offers an intimate, academically rigorous program for students interested in exploring the encounters between East and West. From the time of Alexander the Great, the port of Alanya was a crucial link in Mediterranean commerce with Egypt, Lebanon, Cyprus, Greece and the Holy Land. As such, it bears traces of the Hellanistic, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman civilizations.

The McGhee Center villa semester program offers courses in Turkish language as well as economics, culture and politics, and theology. The McGhee Center emphasizes an in-depth look at Turkey through an extensive field trip program including a ten-day orientation in Istanbul and Ankara, a week-long study tour and multiple other day and weekend trips. Past groups have visited: Edirne, Bursa, Konya, Antalya, Cappadocia, Cyprus and Southeastern Turkey.

The McGhee Center program is designed as a living learning community (LLC) that emphasizes both academic and personal development. A signature element is greater interaction among faculty, staff and students through academically rigorous courses, shared meals and the opportunities these provide for developing interpersonal relationships, and faculty-led extra-curricular activities and excursions. Upon successful completion of the program, all students receive a Georgetown University transcript.
Setting Description:
Alanya and its surroundings bear the traces of many eastern Mediterranean civilizations – Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, Crusader, Ottoman, and more. Alanya’s beaches, ruins, and summer nightlife draw visitors from abroad and its present-day landscape reveals mosques alongside internet cafes, medieval pleasure gardens and Roman ruins amidst orchards cultivated for global markets, and modern shopping malls near the castles and caravanserais of the ancient Silk Road.
Cost:
The program fee includes tuition, academic fees, room and partial board, program excursions/activities and supplemental insurance. Transportation to/from Turkey is not included in the program fee.
