Program Overview

Program Description:

This course explores the history and politics of Ireland from approximately 1600 to present day. The course will begin with a brief overview of Neolithic inhabitants, and the effects of Christianity and the influx of the Norse on Celtic Ireland. We will then investigate the repercussions of over 800 years of English/British influence in Ireland, specifically examining the road to independence and ‘The Troubles’ of a divided island. Finally, students will consider Ireland of the 21st century: a member of the European Union, and a place of vibrant culture and immigration—after a long history of isolation, censorship and emigration.

This program will be transitioning to a summer program for 2018.
