Program Overview

Program Description:
Our courses therefore stress the importance of French as a vibrant language with a strong global presence, as they examine the rich variety and ongoing international influence of French and Francophone traditions and civilizations from the Middle Ages to the present, from Europe to the Caribbean (and beyond). Graduate options involving French Studies include the MA in French, the MAT in French, the MA in Comparative Literature, and the PhD in Comparative Studies. The first two graduate options provide in-depth French training (the MA in literary analysis and critical theory; the MAT in the pedagogy of teaching French as a second language). The second two options allow graduate students to combine advanced study of French literature, theory, and culture with other intellectual areas, such as another body of literature (English, Caribbean, Italian, Spanish), or another discipline (history, political science, philosophy, anthropology, art history).
