- Program Description:
- The Film In Action Documentary Filmmaking course is a unique opportunity for students with an interest in filmmaking to travel overseas to a developing country and produce a short documentary film with an NGO. Film In Action provides a curriculum based around producing meaningful narrative based documentary films, taking you through the three stages of pre-production, production and post-production.
During the course there are a wide variety of technical, practical and theory based sessions. Throughout the course, students will have the opportunity to spend time getting to know a culture, community and the people of their host country, as they are developing their skills as storytellers. You will receive professional tuition and have access to professional filmmaking equipment on which to shoot and edit their films.
Students participating in the Film In Action Documentary Outreach course will learn a broad range of theoretical, practical and technical skills which allows them to explore the process of documentary storytelling through first hand experience. The curriculum will take students through a model for researching, planning, shooting, editing, marketing and distributing a short documentary, emphasizing a structured, in-depth approach whereby they only begin shooting once they understand their subject and the world they inhabit. You will learn the skills needed, to not just capture eye-catching images, but images with meaning, that form an emotional engagement between the audience and your subject. In each of the stages of production the students will learn the skills, processes and approach needed to produce a narrative based documentary. Understanding how to research and interview through tutorials and practice in the field. Learning the principles of producing, cinematography, direction and editing that will serve their story through practical workshops and exercises out in the field.
Our courses will give students a wide range of skills and experience, not just in the creative field of filmmaking but also teamwork, leadership, international development and foreign languages also. Students can gain class credit for participating in our programs and our tutors can liaise with your professors to assess your participation in the course.
