Program Overview

Program Description:

Biomedical engineering is a multidisciplinary field in which the principles of engineering are applied to solving problems in biology or medicine. It applies quantitative, analytical, and integrative methods from the molecular level to that of the whole organism. This broadens our understanding of basic biological processes and enables us to develop innovative approaches for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. The Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering program at the Aachen University of Applied Sciences, Juelich Campus prepares students to apply engineering concepts to scientific and practical problems in biology, medicine, and health care. The Master's program is taught completely in English and is accredited by the German accrediation agency AQAS (www.aqas.de). The program is 2 years (4 semesters) and concludes with a Master's thesis. Most students typically spend two to two and a half years completing the program. Subjects taught include -Artificial Organs -Biomechanics of the Locomotion System -Cell Biophysics -Cell Culture Technology & Medical Biotechnology -Computer Modelling & Dynamic Systems -Continuum Mechanics -Lasers in Biology & Medicine -Medical Imaging -Medical Statistics -Molecular Biology & Genetics -Selected Examples of Chemical Sensors & Biosensors One of the main goals of the program is to bring foreign students to Germany. Students work in close cooperation with several laboratories at this university, including biotechnology, material science and laser technology. Furthermore, the Research Center Juelich, Germany's largest research center, and other companies and hospitals near Aachen likewise place a special emphasis on biomedical research and development. The region of North Rhine-Westphalia now represents a center for research and development in biomedical engineering and biotechnology as well as in medical research.
