Program Overview

Program Description:
Evolve Academy is a summer school that teaches Ontario Ministry of Education high school courses in the developing world. We provide our students with a better understanding of the complexities and challenges of life in a developing country such as Kenya, and to appreciate more profoundly the differences between the developed and the developing worlds. In July 2012, we are offering three courses, all taught from our base camp in central Kenya. These credit courses are all designated to meet university/college admission standards. Each class will have between 10 and 15 students. The location of our base camp is an important component to meeting our educational goals. The facility is located inside the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in central Kenya. Near Mt. Kenya (a UNESCO World Heritage site) and essentially right on the equator, we are about 20 minutes from the bustling market town of Nanyuki. This location, with its diverse environmental and social conditions, affords us the opportunity to address in unique and creative ways the ideas, concepts and skills that are integral to each course. Such an approach provides our students with insights and experiences that are not easily attained in a traditional classroom.

Setting Description:
Ol Pejeta Conservancy is a 110,000 acre wildlife conservancy and research facility located just to the west of Mt. Kenya in the central part of the country. Our base camp is nestled just inside the southern edge of the reserve. It is a truly spectacular place to live and learn. We wake up each morning with a view from our tent across the open savannah toward the Abedares Mountains. In the other direction, Mt. Kenya rears above the surrounding plains. The large open area in front of camp is visited daily by a wide range of wildlife including elephants, impala, zebra, warthogs, and even the occasional rhino! The camp has its own dedicated gate, which is guarded 24 hours a day. All visitors must be cleared by the gate staff and must sign in and out. To keep the wildlife from getting too close, the camp is surrounded by an electric fence. At night, the paths to the washrooms and toilets are lit with lanterns and guards patrol the camp until dawn. Fresh food is prepared daily and served b
