Program Description:

The Master of Music Education degree is designed to assist current or future music educators with additional professional resources necessary to further their goals for excellence in the classroom and to prepare them for entry into a doctoral program in Music Education. The program can be completed in two years, and tuition is comparable to state universities. Upon completion of the Master of Music in Music Education degree, the graduate should be able to demonstrate: •The ability to function effectively as a music educator both musically and administratively •An understanding of and ability to utilize research methods designed to improve practices in schools, classrooms, rehearsals and performances, and the ability to frame the results in a scholarly manner •The ability to organize and develop a program of choral, instrumental or elementary music including personnel, facilities, equipment and budget—or to make a contribution of value to an existing program •Extended knowledge and experience in the area of classroom teaching and/or rehearsal settings, including conceptual understanding and practical application of methods that support learning •Knowledge of current trends and issues in music education •A basic understanding and working knowledge of current music technology for use in practical and artistic applications •The ability to prepare musical experiences that are informed by an understanding of applicable historical performance practices •Demonstrate knowledge of principles of harmony, musical form, and compositional process, and the ability to use this knowledge in written, verbal, aural, and visual analyses. •The ability to articulate a Christian worldview of teaching and music education

The Department of Music is a member of the National Association of Schools of Music and the Missouri Association of Departments and Schools of Music. Courses and degree plans are designed to satisfy requirements of these accrediting agencies.

Requirements:

•Submit a Graduate Application. •Hold an earned Music Education baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university. •Applicants must have state licensure to teach (a “teaching certificate”). Students wishing to receive teaching licensure should pursue the Masters of Education in Secondary Teaching. •Have a grade point average of 3.0 or better, on a 4.0 scale, in the last 60 hours of undergraduate work. Applicants with a GPA between 2.5-2.99 may be considered for provisional admission. •Complete a Department of Music Graduate Entrance Exam. Contact Dr. Michael Kolstad for requirements. •Audition for the Department of Music. Auditions can be scheduled through the Department of Music, or a recent CD or DVD is acceptable. International Requirements:

•All students admitted to graduate study in music must have basic English language competence as determined by the use of TOELF exams. Information concerning language competence can be found in the Graduate Catalog, in the section concerning International Students/TOEFL Score Requirements. •The catalog states: “… international students whose first language is not English must earn a TOEFL score of 550 on the paper-based exam, 213 on the computer-based or 79-80 on the Internet-based exam.” For more information, contact the Graduate Studies Department.
