Program Overview
- Program Description:
- We are looking for a motivated and energetic individual to help us manage our non-profit organization in the cosmopolitan city of Bogotá. As an intern, you will be in charge of leading and managing international volunteers in various social work projects throughout Bogotá. You will ensure that projects are running smoothly and that volunteers are contributing to the betterment of underprivileged communities. You will communicate with the staff at our projects, address their concerns, and collaborate with them to find solutions to issues. This position is dynamic and continually changing, so there is always a lot to learn! One day, you might go and teach an English class to a classroom full of eager young minds, and the next day you might help serve lunch for over 150 homeless men, all the while guiding international volunteers. Other responsibilities include running a construction and renovation project within budget constraints, implementing new extracurricular educational programs at a local orphanage, evaluating current volunteering programs and researching new volunteering opportunities. You will also help with the every-day running of the volunteer apartment, organizing volunteer accommodation and transportation, and ensuring that all volunteers’ needs are met.
You will improve your leadership and management skills, as well as improve your abilities to work in teams and independently. If your Spanish is a little rusty this is a great opportunity to improve it as you talk to local Colombians. This is also a good chance to learn hands-on experience in community development and project implementation. You'll work with a constantly changing team of international volunteers and make some great friends.
- Setting Description:
- You will live in Bogota, Colombia's capital and home to about 8,000,000 inhabitants. It's a very cosmopolitan and exciting city where there is always something to do and see- at any time of the day. Bogota is also known as "South America's Athens" due to its high number of libraries and universities. You'll find a bookstore on any street, many of them selling books in Spanish and English. The volunteer apartment is located in the neighborhood of El Polo Club, situated very close to a popular shopping and nightlife district. The Virrey Park is very close by in case you want to have a picnic on Sundays or need some trails for exercising. The Transmilenio, our metro system, is also very close, allowing for speedy commutes to the volunteering projects and other parts of the city.
- Cost:
- This program is free of cost. We provide room and board for the intern, but the he/she will have to pay for airfare to and from Colombia. The intern will also be responsible for his/her medical insurance throughout the internship.
