Program Overview

Program Description:
We are excited to announce our YOUTH INITIATIVE in Nepal! ELI’s coordinators in the field and our team in Denver have been working tirelessly to cut overhead and re-arrange funds to make this happen. Starting August 1, 2013, the program fees for orphanage and public school programs in Nepal are considerably reduced! Starting at two weeks for just $185! Children's programs are fun and they are a great way to make a difference in the lives of little ones - everyone can contribute at orphanages and schools. Orphanages These organizations are great places to volunteer. The organizations really need activity directors, tutors, and mentors for the kids. The children range in age from toddlers to teenagers. This is a great placement for independent, up-beat volunteers . Typical Day: Please keep in mind that there is no truly typical day while volunteering abroad. Volunteers generally work 4-6 hours a day, Monday through Friday. Volunteers day-to-day activities vary from placement to placement and volunteer to volunteer. Volunteers' exact schedules are determined when they arrive in country. 7:30am - Breakfast provided at the volunteer house 8:30am - Arrive at the orphanage, help the kids get ready for school 9:30am - Walk the kids to school 10:00am - Play with kids who are too young to go to school or free time 12:30pm - Lunch and Free Time 3:00pm - Kids get home from school, volunteers help with homework 4:00pm - Snacks, activity and play time (this is the busiest time of the day) 6:00pm - Dinner (volunteers can choose to eat with the kids or at the volunteer house) Public Schools ELI places volunteers teachers at a few primary and secondary schools in the Kathmandu Valley, in the Rasuwa District. The minimum time commitment is 1 month. Most volunteers teach English, as this skill helps children to get jobs once they are out of school, and few children have the opportunity to study with a native speaker. Typical Day: Volunteers generally work 4-6 hours a day, Monday through Friday. Volunteers day-to-day activities vary from placement to placement and volunteer to volunteer. Volunteers' exact schedules are determined when they arrive in country. 7:30am - Breakfast provided at the volunteer house 9:00am - Arrive at school, attend to morning classes 12:30pm - Lunch 1:30pm - Afternoon class 3:00pm - School is out, free time 6:00pm - Dinner (volunteers can choose to eat with the kids or at the volunteer house) School for HIV+ Children This is the first school of it's kind in Nepal. HIV+ children are not allowed to enroll at regular schools, so volunteers are needed to teach English, help with administrative duties, etc. Sample Budget Volunteering in Nepal has never been this affordable! $100 application fee, program fee (depends on duration), visa fee (depends on duration), plane tickets, $50 a week for lunch and getting around, spending money for evening activities and weekend trips (riding the elephants in Chitwan, renting a boat in Pokhara, rafting, bungee jumping, trekking, etc.). These programs are open to all ages, nationalities, new and past ELIers. Our goal is to fill the volunteer house, encourage volunteers to return, and get volunteers to the programs that need them most! Program fee covers airport pick-up, orientation, accommodations in our lovely house, and 2 meals a day. It’s great if volunteers can arrive on these dates: 2013: Sept 30, (no arrivals during Dashain), Oct 28, Nov 11, Nov 25 2014: Open arrivals through winter and early spring. Arrival dates start back up: May 19, May 26, June 2, June 16, June 30, July 14, July 28, August 11, August 25, September 8, September 22 Email for later dates.

Setting Description:
There is no country more beloved by those who have visited than Nepal. Its warm and friendly people, a rich cultural heritage, and scenic beauty defy the imagination. Nepal is one of the few places where Hindus and Buddhists live together in harmony. This country has long been a popular destination for explorers and nature lovers. At any given moment Kathmandu is overflowing with visitors from all corners of the globe. The hot terai of the north Indian plains gives way to the foothills, then rise dramatically skyward to the icy Himalayan peaks, topping off at Mt. Everest - the highest point on earth at 8850m. Visitors revel in experiencing some of the most incredible trekking in the world, white water rafting, visiting game parks and nature preserves, or simply spending the day leisurely floating on the peaceful waters of Phewa Tal in Pokhara. In spite of these natural blessings, Nepal is one of the poorest countries ELI works in. With a per capita income of approx $490 per year, mos
