Program Overview

Program Description:
The program is designed to provide participants with the opportunity to study aspects of Venetian history and culture, which have been particularly important in the shaping of European civilization.

The course will examine the religious, doctrinal,spiritual and hagiographic traditions of Catholic Christianity as it was lived in the Empire of Venice through religious art as well as current devotional practice, ceremonies and traditions still extant today. Topics will include the place of Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary, the Evangelist Mark and other saints in Catholic life and thinking then and now.

Setting Description:
The city of Venice, with its scenic canals and islands, will serve as the participants' home and classroom for this four-week summer program.Students live in the dormitories of Venice International University on San Servolo Island.
