Program Description:

This four-week, one-course summer program is designed to provide intensive This is a four week, one course credit program which provides Portuguese language instruction while exposing students to the reality of social issues in Rio de Janeiro and environmental issues in the Brazilian Amazon. In both locations, students interact with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that engage in issues of civics, citizen’s rights, culture, and sustainable development. Students live with host families and make several excursions of cultural significance.

This is a four week immersion course in Portuguese language and Brazilian culture. Elementary language pre-requisite is required. It covers the intermediate language curriculum, developing aural comprehension, speaking, reading and writing skills. This course provides grammar practice and development of effective strategies for oral communication done in conjunction with intensive cultural program activities and excursions.

Setting Description:

Classes meet M-F for the first two weeks in Rio de Janeiro at UNIRIO (Universidade do Rio de Janeiro) with afternoon activities and excursions. The second two weeks of the program will be housed at CESUPA (Centro Universitário do Pará) a prestigious private university equipped with the best technological facilities in Belém do Pará. In Belém classes will also meet M-F in the morning with afternoon activities and excursions.
