Program Overview

Program Description:
The MA in Political and Public Communication examines the relationship between the media, politics and the public, and considers how their overlapping relations influence democracy and the distribution of power. The programme deals with the major issues in the contemporary political communication arena including spin, agenda-setting, public opinion formation, public relations, political advertising and new media. Modules analyse the impact of different political communication strategies on the political process, government, policy-making and also in the non-governmental area. Participants are also exposed to the history of media and politics in Ireland and elsewhere. Students are encouraged to approach political communication in a critically manner and particular emphasis is placed on original research and independent study. Guest speakers and research projects are a central part of the programme. The MA in Political and Public Communication will interest those with an interest in politics and political communication, public relations, media, journalism and public policy formation. The content will also be attractive to those seeking to develop a critical perspective on their own career by means of having a theoretical framework to understand, evaluate and assess different aspects of the political communication process. Please note a number of modifications are being made to the programme in 2011/12 including a recasting of the content of CM599 Electoral Process and Political Communication, which is being re-titled as CM599 The Political Campaign. An additional optional module - CM563 Social Media, Journalism and Democracy - will also be offered in semester one.
