Program Overview

Program Description:
The post-baccalaureate Doctoral Program in Physical Therapy is designed to educate students to become self-directed practitioners with strong clinical problem solving skills. Students will obtain entry-level practice competencies as well as more advanced competencies based upon specialized track options, electives and a clinical internship. The program stresses an adult learning pedagogy of critical thinking, which integrates scientific knowledge and clinical skills. A capstone project, requiring a level of research acumen, is required. The program is built on a curriculum model that grounds the students in the following domains of learning; scientific foundations, clinical sciences, critical exploration, professional development, health care systems and management, electives and clinical experiences. The program is part of the world renowned Columbia University Medical Center and is located on the Medical Center campus. The program utilizes the enormous resources of the Medical Center and builds its curriculum to educate physical therapists who will be at the forefront of health care as competent clinicians, administrators, educators and researchers. Graduates of the program are eligible to sit for the national licensing examination under the auspices of the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy Education. All states require licensure to practice and these licenses are based on the results of the national examination that is given at testing centers across the county. Over the past 2 years, since graduating the first DPT class in 2006, the passing rate on the exam has been 100%, scores range 1.5 SD above the NY State mean and 1 SD above the national average. Graduates of the program have employment before graduation or immediately thereafter in geographical and specialized areas of choice. For academic year 2008-09 tuition set at $29,000 (Years I and II)and $25,000 Year III. Program merit scholarships available to qualified applicants.
