Program Overview

Program Description:

Chemistry students at City College have a number of options from which to choose. The standard chemistry curriculum is the program of choice for students who do not yet have specific career goals and who wish to maximize their options. The biochemistry option is more specialized and is often chosen by premedical and predental students. Students who want to work immediately after graduation may select the industrial option. Those who want to teach may choose the secondary education option. With grants in excess of three million dollars annually, City's Department of Chemistry has been ranked in the top fifty nationally and fourth in New York State in federal grant funding. Thus, students have access to exemplary research opportunities and facilities, including laboratories, computer rooms, instrument rooms, cold and animal rooms, as well as electronics, glassworking and machine shops. A Chemistry Learning Center is also available for student use. Almost all students actively participate in research, an invaluable experience that builds self-reliance and strengthens applications to graduate and professional schools. Careers: Graduates may work in industry, government or teaching immediately after graduation. Many choose to continue their education by enrolling in graduate, medical or other health professional schools.
