- Degree Level:
- Gap Year
- Academic Year, Fall Semester, Spring Semester
- Program Description:
Perfect your Spanish in the oldest city of the Americas.
Jump into the rhythm of The Dominican Republic’slively capital, a bustling city with the laid-back charm of an oceanside resort. “La Capital” will serve as a vibrant setting for your daily Spanish instruction, along with an optional college-level course and your choice of cooking, music, dance, or jewelry-making classes. After class, hit Santo Domingo’s famous beaches, people-watch and snack on empanadas or fried plantains at one of the many outdoor restaurants along Plaza de España.
At home with your Dominican host family, dine on rice and beans and other native cuisine while gaining valuable real-world practice in conversational Spanish. In neighborhoods throughout the city, you’ll find authentic markets and walk down cobblestone streets, hearing echoes of merengue and bachata from the shops that line them.
With new friends, you’ll experience the Dominican culture through organized CIEE activities like tours of the Colonial Zone and colonial sugar mills, visits to museums including the Museum of Dominican Man and the Museo de Arte Moderno, and strolls through the National Botanical Gardens. At the end, you’ll return home with vastly improved Spanish language skills, and countless memories you’ll carry with you for a lifetime.
*You can create a duo program by combining any two CIEE Gap Year Abroad semesters and get 10% off the second semester.
- Please see our website for tuition information. Prices are subject to change and will be locked in for the participant on the day CIEE receives the completed application and program deposit.
