Program Overview

Program Description:

Master of Arts in Sociology and Social Anthropology (One-year Program)
The primary goal of the program is to enable students to deepen and broaden their knowledge of theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of social pheonomena, structures and processes. In a wide range of courses on social theory, migration, religion, ethnicity, cultural policies, economic sociology, globalization, dynamics of modernity, institutional change, urban processes and gender relations,
students are encouraged to articulate individual positions with regard to bridging the two disciplines in the topics they study. One of the main endeavors of the program is to develop the research skills of students by offering solid training in methodology.

Master of Arts in Sociology and Social Anthropology with Specialization in Global and Urban Studies (Two-year Program)
The two-year MA is an innovative approach to studying the relationship of globalization and urban configurations over space and time. Like the one–year MA, the program is based on the disciplinary combination of sociology and social anthropology, leading to a unique perspective on how political, economic and social phenomena, structures and relations play themselves out across the global and the urban scale. The ‘global’ historically has been produced on other different levels, and has grown in the
interplay of various scales, of which the urban is a privileged one. The ’city’ is regarded as constitutive of the global and as an important venue to explore the spatial dynamics of globalization and its impact on the hierarchies of power and governance structures. This program has a strong research component: one entire semester is devoted to fieldwork for the Master’s thesis.
