Program Overview

Program Description:
Australia offers a different perspective on familiar views. Australian theatre and film stars dazzle American audiences while the rough and seemingly untamed natural splendor draws Americans to a distant land. In this program, you make connections between American and Australian movies and theatre and learn how each teaches the other to tell their unique stories. We'll also explore the origins of the Australian culture and landscape through the hand of drawing and the lens of digital photography. The theatre course appeals to students in theater and history programs, but is open to anyone interested in media. The art course appeals to art majors as well as anyone interested in photography or digital video.

Current Australian stars are well known on American screens and stage: Hugh Jackman, Cate Blanchett, Baz Luhrmann. Discover the origins and development of Australian theatre from the first play performed by convicts in 1789 to today’s internationally recognized stars and writers. Learn how the Australian theatre and movie worlds interconnect. Make your own links between how a truly Australian theatre emerged and the way in which a uniquely American theatre developed. Field trips to see productions at Melbourne Theatre Company and the ArtsHouse, and a tour of the historic Athanaeum Theatre will bring Australian Theatre and film alive!
