Program Overview

Program Description:

Experience beautiful South Africa through a scientific lense. Spend your summer on a wildlife reserve with lions and elephants, on the top of the stunning and iconic Table Mountain and down on the beach to observe whales and great white sharks. Get comfortable with hippos, leopards and impalas in Swaziland as you start your journey learning about the history of this environment and research methods you’ll need to aid its conservation. If you get lucky, you may even spot a majestic black rhinoceros! The adventure continues in Cape Town, where you will kayak, hike and make a start on your final project.

In a trip full of life changing moments, the highlight might just be swimming with sharks. Witness the beauty of these intelligent hunters up close through a protective, metal cage. Learn about the threats to these famous animals and others as you work with veterinarians and scientists to collect helpful data and maintain habitats. Before finishing up your research project, take a trip to the western edge of the country, known for whale watching and for its shark conservation programs. This summer, conservation science and safari adventures come together to make it an unforgettable trip.

Setting Description:
South Africa is wide open plains, soaring mountains and impressive biodiversity. Start the day early on safari up north, known for sightings of giraffes, zebra, lions and elephants. Keep your eyes peeled for leopards and cheetahs, camouflaged as they nap in high trees. Down south, take a cable car to the top of Table Mountain, offering breathtaking views of Cape Town and the sparkling ocean beyond. Dive deep with great white sharks, safe in a metal cage, and learn about their habits and environment. Make every day an adventure this summer.
