Ever dreamed of a career in photography or photojournalism? Do you have a passion for taking pictures? Photography is art, and it is science. It blends creativity, imagination and technical savvy to produce a moment frozen in time. In competent hands, a camera can capture a memory, share an emotion, tell a story and inspire a feeling. A single picture has the power to change the world. The goal of this course is to empower you to compose, edit and produce images that reflect the amazing world around us. Panama is the ideal location for this course's unique blend of photography, adventure, education and experience. Spanish colonialism, modern skyscrapers and indigenous culture intersect at the junction of North and South America in a stunning country with surprising diversity. This trip provides the opportunity to explore and photograph an amazing variety of subject matter throughout Panama. We venture from the islands, beaches and reefs of the Caribbean coast over the continental divide past volcanoes, waterfalls and cloud forest, and then travel through banana plantations to Pacific coast beaches and rainforest. Create a dramatic portfolio filled with images that play with lighting, action and color, and capture the essence of the friends and people you meet along this unforgettable journey.
Explore and photograph the captivating culture and landscapes of Panama. Learn the technical and artistic aspects of digital photography through photo assignments. Learn digital production, editing and basic Photoshop skills. Create a professional photography portfolio. Go sea kayaking, whitewater rafting, rock climbing and surfing. Earn 20 hours of community service.
- Setting Description:
- On Isla Bastimentos, a quick boat ride from Bocas del Toro on the Caribbean coast, we start off with the basics of digital photography and camera operation as we explore the art of taking evocative pictures. Then, we head back to mainland Panama and venture to the hip, western city of Boquete — where the technical aspects of taking photos get put to the test. This area, on the Caldera River, is ready for its close up. No studio, or Photoshopped-in backdrop can approximate the natural beauty found on Isla de Coiba. Located in the Gulf of Chiriquí off Panama’s Pacific Coast, this former penal colony and now UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a a bio-diverse playground and an aspiring photographer’s dream. It’s a haven for crested eagles and scarlet macaws. Turtles swim in its lagoons and 30 varieties of bats call this place home. Trust us, you will not run out of subject matter to shoot.

This program is a great way to meet new people, explore a new country and learn all about cameras and photography. The accommodations were great, the food was amazing and I made great new friends that I still keep in touch with. I went on the summer 2017
program and it was the best way to spend my summer! This program is perfect for if you love travelling, are a people person and are open to trying new things. - I LOVED THIS TRIP10/15/17
This past summer I had an amazing experience on this trip. I didn't really have much expectations but it was definitely better than i could have ever expected. We all arrived at the airport on the same day and were greeted by our instructors. Throughout
the trip we played games and did group activities so we could get a chance to bond with the rest of the group and even our counselors. Everyday we did something different like zip lining, rock climbing, snorkeling or surfing! Every day was an adventure and it was absolutely amazing! We also made time everyday to focus on our photography and learn something new. Another thing i like about the trip was that we didn't stay in the same place the entire 17 days. Throughout the entire trip we stayed in 4 different spots which was really cool since we got to see so many different parts of panama. I felt safe the entire time i was there and snacks were provided 24/7 so i never felt like wasn't eating enough. We didn't have a chance to do laundry so i definitely recommend packing a few extra pairs of shorts and a few extra shirts. I would definitely recommend this trip to anyone who loves photography. This trip definitely taught me so much and gave me an opportunity to get some criticism on my work since we did present images to the group. Overall I has such a blast and I would deffintly do it all over again if I could.read moreBottom Line:Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
- The Best Place on Earth!11/08/16
I could not say enough about this amazing trip! I became a new person by the end; I have so many new stories to tell, and so many new friends. While on this trip I learned so much about photography and about myself. I really learned to step out of my
comfort zone, take risks, and to embrace Panama! Whether it was pouring rain while rock climbing in Boquete, or burning hot when walking through Bocas Del Toro, I would always say “embrace Panama!” I knew this was a once in a lifetime opportunity for most of us, so I wanted to try to make the best of what was going on. Getting to learn the basics of photography was so fun and interesting; we got the chance to do hands-on learning and some really cool projects. I learned a crazy amount over the 17 days I was in Panama. And helping out in salt Creek was the most rewarding feeling in the world, I honestly had the most amazing time! I have made lifelong friends, taken hundreds of pictures, and created memories that will last forever. Snorkeling with the sea turtles, watching dolphins jump, learning the history of photography or surfing the day away, all things that I absolutely loved. I had the most amazing time and this will be a trip I will never forget!read moreBottom Line:Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
- Life-Changing Experience10/30/16
Pursuing my decision to embark on the Panama Photography trip for 17 days changed my life in more ways than one. My first experience traveling outside of the United States made me fall in love with traveling, as I returned with so many memories, stories,
friends, and photography skills. Each day was filled with a combination of an adventure in one of the four cities we visited, as well as opportunities to expand our portfolios with the help of our amazing instructors. Spending 17 days away from home also taught me how to be independent and try new things when it comes to being a leader and finding myself being presented with unique opportunities along the way, whether it was forming new friendships or swimming to shore late at night to find baby sea turtles. This experience is definitely one that I will never forget and will continue to cherish the amazing photos that I returned with.read moreBottom Line:Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
