Program Description:

In culturally-rich Nicaragua, join a team of innovators to partner with local organizations and help design solutions that will impact the daily lives of Nicaraguans.  Learn about environmental, public health and infrastructure challenges facing local communities. Then, using science, technology and engineering, build and help implement sanitation systems, eco-friendly cook stoves and water filters to provide access to clean drinking water.

Travel through Nicaragua’s rural and urban landscapes and soak in the tropical rainforests and volcanic peaks. Enjoy the warmth and generosity of Nicaraguans during a short homestay. Wander the cobblestone streets of Granada, surf the white sand beaches, and hike, horseback ride and kayak through the unspoiled terrain of Ometepe Island. In the end, you will have come to know and understand a country filled with beauty and will have worked to help Nicaraguans develop and implement technologies that address critical issues within their communities.

Setting Description:
Begin your trip in Historic Leon, the political and intellectual center of the nation. Finish orientation and head to Granada, where you will take you first course in appropriate technology. Next, explore Las Iletas where you will begin your cook stove and water and sanitation projects. Lastly, meet your homestay families and work on your community projects while enjoying cultural activities such as cooking classes, a coffee tour. Finally, after your final presentation and community celebration, relax by surfing on the white sand beaches of Playa Gigante.
