- Program Description:
On the tropical island of Curaçao, discover the importance of marine biology. Find out why early Portuguese sailors dubbed this the ‘healing island’ as you explore impressive forts, relaxing beaches and summit the island’s highest peak on Mt. Christofel. There is much to take in on this beautiful island, but perhaps the most exciting aspect is being able to assist the South Caribbean’s largest tropical field research station, following your own working hypothesis with the help of scientists and your fellow students.
Have you ever walked out of your bedroom and jumped right into the ocean to snorkel and explore a pristine reef? Learn about the coral ecosystem right on your doorstep, then join a traditional classroom for lectures and labs where you can expand your knowledge with hands-on experience. Get your wetsuit out to conduct research and studies as you work on answering your scientific questions. Earn multiple underwater certifications as you hone your skills while pursuing your passion and build on your current knowledge as you are exposed to the fascinating and varied world of marine biology.
- Setting Description:
- Before the ‘blue edge’ of South America is the shallow water setting for this adventure. This diverse habitat off the coast of Curaçao is ideal for getting hands on with marine biology in the colorful reefs and idyllic beaches. The crystal clear waters are your classroom for researching peacock flounder, parrotfish and barracuda as you glide above coral that carpets the sandy ocean floor. Curaçao is rarely affected by hurricanes, so the island and underwater beauty stay as natural as it’s inhabitants and tourist can keep them. Explore the underwater kingdom and get familiar with island formations of lava and limestone unique to this magical island.

- Field Experiences in Curacao10/21/18
This is a great program for students who are looking for both the field and classroom learning opportunities on tropical waters. An average day consisted of a few hours of classroom lecture and scuba diving on the very reefs of Curacao. As a current high
school senior, I wanted my summer before senior year to include both scuba diving and learning about marine science and this program was perfect for that. But I do have to warn you, however, that after this trip your expectations of scuba diving will be set up high(maybe too high) since the reefs there offer aesthetics representing the color wheel itself. If you do choose to go, make sure to bring an underwater camera with a diving-housing!read moreBottom Line:Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
