Program Overview

Program Description:

Interested in a future in veterinary medicine? This program is the perfect place to start building your experience working with animals. Dive right into adventure, rafting class 3 and 4 rapids, spotting monkeys and tropical birds along with way. Travel to Quesada to learn about large animals: everything from pigs to goats to cows and horses. Learn how to palpate and see if a cow is pregnant, learn more about both the dairy and beef industries and give physical exams to dogs at a canine rescue site. Next, head to the La Fortuna area to focus on horses! Learn how to give an equine ultrasound, examine hooves and gums, and more. Take a break to go horseback riding and canyoneering!  The next stop is near Manuel Antonio National Park. You will get to volunteer at the wildlife rescue center that houses sloths, otters, toucans, and many more. Here you will learn about a number of animals including monkeys and reptiles through physical exams, practicing necropsies, learning about autopsies and monitoring animals before and after surgery. Finally, experience life as a vet as you shadow professionals during surgeries on cats and dogs. Assist and help administer anesthesia, apply sutures, and expand your knowledge about post-surgery procedures as you care for the animals during recovery.

Work alongside professionals as they examine a diverse range of animals. Observe surgeries and learn post-surgery protocols. Zip line through the rain forest on a canopy tour. Whitewater raft the Sarapiqui. Surf Costa Rica's waves and  ride horses. It's incredible.

Setting Description:
Travel to the Sarapiqui region and experience the vibrant noise of the rainforest. Work in Quesada, one of the major centers for ranching and agriculture, and learn how to care for animals on a farm. Spend a few days learning about equine medicine and exploring La Fortuna's waterfalls and volcanoes. Next, find yourself at a wildlife sanctuary and refuge near Manuel Antonio National Park, home to four species of monkeys and 184 species of birds. Explore the national park and go surfing! End your adventure with a 3-day spay and neuter clinic in a small suburb of San Jose.
