What makes São Paulo unique? Brazil is home to more people of Japanese descent than any country except Japan. And in São Paulo—Brazil’s original melting pot—this heritage is displayed with particular pride and vivacity. The city is home to more than 665,000 people of Japanese ancestry, many of whom live in the Liberdade neighborhood, the city’s “Japantown”. A giant red archway marks the entrance, and the streets are lit by traditional red-and-white paper style lanterns. Also home to a large Chinese and Korean population, it’s the place to get anything and everything Asian, from manga (Japanese comics) and crafts to exotic fruits and some of the best sushi this side of the Pacific. And its weekend street fair is one of the city’s biggest tourist draws. Liberdade is one of São Paulo’s coolest bairros, a testament to the energy and diversity of Brazil’s most cosmopolitan city.
