Program Overview

Program Description:

The Grenoble summer program offers intensive study of French language and civilization at the intermediate and advanced levels. Language courses emphasize speaking and listening skills and help to develop vocabulary through reading and writing exercises. Homestays add significantly to the cultural experience. Local excursions in and around the region enhance the curriculum and are a fundamental part of the civilization and culture courses. Students seeking to improve their proficiency will find that this intensive eight-credit language preparatory program provides the ideal setting for making great progress in language skills.

Students enroll in one of three tracks based on their level of language proficiency or their specific academic interest—Track 1: Intermediate Language & Civilization, Track II: Advanced Language & Culture, Track III: Statistics and French Language. Track I: Intermediate Language & Civilization Students enroll in one course on French civilization and culture and one French language course. The courses are not taught simultaneously; the culture and civilization course is taught in the first half of the program. Students then move on to their language course in the latter half. All courses are conducted in French. Track II: Advanced Language & Culture Students enroll in one course on French civilization and culture and one French language course. The courses are not taught simultaneously; the culture and civilization course is taught in the first half of the program. Students then move on to their language course in the latter half. All courses are conducted in French. Track III: Statistics & French Language Students will begin with an intensive two weeks devoted to the course in statistics followed by enrollment in a French language course. The statistics course will continue to meet periodically concurrent with the French language course. Track III students with no background in French will also be provided with basic survival French instruction during the initial two weeks of the program.
