Program Overview
- Program Description:
Students take courses designed to give insight into the history and significance of classical Japan as well as exposing them to the aesthetic beauty of this unique country. Included in the program cost are field trips and cultural excursions to such destinations as Gion Festival and Yoiyama stall nights, Zazen with instruction in the temple, Buddhist secret mountain Hiei Zan, Kinkakuji (Golden pavilion), Zen temples and gardens, and Arashiyama Bamboo forest and temples.
This program offers hands-on art courses in deep-rooted artistic traditions. Classes expose students to the traditional and contemporary spirit of Japan. The majority of the instruction takes place during the excursions by experienced teachers and artists. Two courses are offered in this 6 credit summer program: Japanese Art, Culture, and Literature and Digital Photography.

- Setting Description:
- Students spend most of the program in the world famous city of Kyoto, but also venture to central Honshu to enhance their academics and cultural experience. Kyoto is a beautiful city, from lakeside Biwako in the north-east, to the confluence at National Rt. 81. With temples, parks, bustling business districts, markets, from regal estates to the tightly-packed neighborhoods, Kyoto is one of the oldest and most famous of Asian metropolises.
