Theatre in London
June 28 to July 8, 2012
Theatre Workshops
You will participate in five 90-minute drama or musical workshops during the program. Tentative workshops include:
THEATRE IN CONTEXT
Learn about the historical and thematic context for a show you will see and its literary source material. After physical and vocal warm ups, engage in improvisational exercises to illustrate the impact of place and time in theatre.
MAKING A SCENE
Taught by a working professional from a West End theatre. Working from a scripted scene, the focus of this workshop is bringing the text to life in truthful, imaginative and specific ways. Exploring acting methods, vocal techniques and character development, participants engage in acting and improvisational exercises designed to encourage bold and creative acting choices.
OPEN CALL
Develop audition techniques by performing material for a West End casting director and watching a West End professional performing your material. Eight students from your class perform either a monologue or a song for constructive criticism, followed by a talkback session with a West End performer. You will gain an understanding of what is necessary to achieve the best audition.
WORKSHOP AND TOUR AT SHAKESPEARE’S GLOBE THEATRE
A practical introduction to performance conditions at the Globe, exploring the theatre space and its influence on playing style and language. Topics covered may include: the relationship between text and performance, how theatre is affected by cultural and social influences, and how language and form shape meaning.
Theatre Performances
The group will attend four professional performances in London’s popular theatres. Based on scheduling, this usually includes one Shakespeare play, one drama, and two musicals.
