- Dental assistants aid the dentist in the examination and treatment of patients. Their duties include taking and developing x-rays, assisting in the operatory (four-handed dentistry), construction and preparation of temporary crowns and bridges. The dental assistant is also involved in the efficient operation of the dental practice. Insurance, patient relations, billing and the greeting of patients are some of the duties performed by the dental assistant. Arizona College's dental assisting academic program is 4 quarters in length, each quarter consisting of 10 weeks. The student completes an 8 week clinical externship. The program length will be approximately 38 weeks in duration.
