Program Overview

Program Description:

This is a photography program consisting of three weeks of workshops and a five day outback tour during mid-June to early-July (Australian Winter). During the Outback tour an Aboriginal guide will help students understand the cultural specifics of place and space. At the end of the program, participants will exhibit their photography in a major regional art gallery, and many will go on to sell their artwork. Additionally, student’s work will be featured in a university-sponsored publication. The program will be based in the city of Mildura, which is situated between Melbourne, Sydney, and Adelaide. Mildura is a charming oasis by the Murray River, at the center of a large agricultural region that spreads over parts of Victoria, South Australia, and New South Wales. The area is often referred to as the Mediterranean in the Outback, with its picturesque citrus groves and vineyards, endless sunshine and the cosmopolitan feel of a larger city. While on the program, students will visit unique and beautiful locations including Mungo National Park, which is the focal point of the Willandra Lakes World Heritage Area. This park is home to kangaroos, emus and goannas as well as the endangered Yellow Footed Rock Wallaby. Dotted throughout the overhangs and rock faces is an array of Aboriginal rock art, evidence of continuous occupation of the area for more than 8,000 years. Students will also visit the mining town of Broken Hill, whose ‘Line of Lode’ is the largest single source of lead, silver and zinc ore ever discovered on Earth!
