- Social Change and Community Engagement in Rural Jamaica provides students with an academic and practical introduction to the realities of international development efforts, with a specific focus on the experience of rural Jamaica. You’ll meet with and learn from Amizade’s community partner since 2003, the Association of Clubs (AOC). The AOC has been recognized by the Jamaican Government for its excellence in locally-driven rural community development.
This course is an applied writing skills laboratory and a service-learning class. You will be paired up with a nonprofit community partner to produce real communication pieces. We will cover major communication tools of the public relations trade, including news releases, media advisories, features, pitch letters, fact sheets, public service announcements and more. Writing skills are learned by doing. Through this course, you will also have the opportunity to become intimately involved with the community of Petersfield, Jamaica through host family interactions, community activities and professional development. In the process, you will help promote the Petersfield model for social change and share knowledge that encourages future community-led growth and development through.
- Setting Description:
- Jamaica is known for its beach resorts, tropical beauty, and warm, friendly atmosphere, yet the majority of this enchanting island is not visited by tourists. The small and very safe community of Petersfield, located in the heart of Jamaica’s sugarcane industry, offers volunteers a glimpse into a more authentic Jamaican culture than the flashy Montego Bay destinations. Volunteers in Petersfield participate first-hand in the life of a rural community. Working with a local community organization gives volunteers a chance to contribute their skills while absorbing the stories and strength of people working to build a better future for their community.
- Program Tuition is $2,050 and includes: - Contribution to local service effort through Amizade’s Fair Trade Learning model. - Course delivery and instruction accredited through West Virginia University - Accommodations - Three meals per day - Multiple field trips and scheduled educational, cultural and service activities - Comprehensive Travel Insurance
