Program Overview
- Program Description:
The AMIDEAST Education Abroad Summer Intensive Arabic program in Amman, Jordan provides students with the opportunity to earn up to a full academic year of Arabic in just one summer. Beginning, intermediate, and advanced level students can jumpstart their Arabic language journey through rigorous study in both Modern Standard Arabic and Jordanian Colloquial Arabic classes.
Students live with Arabic-speaking Jordanian homestay families and attend classes at AMIDEAST’s center in the bustling neighborhood of Abdoun in Amman. The program is divided into two four-week sessions, and classes meet five hours a day, five days per week. Each session includes about 100 hours of instruction in both Modern Standard Arabic and the local colloquial dialect for a total of six Arabic language credits. One summer session in Jordan covers the material typically presented in one semester on a U.S. campus.
- Setting Description:
- Amman is the capital of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Built on seven hills, Amman has expanded in size and population from a quaint sleepy town at the close of World War II, to the bustling, multicultural metropolis it is today. Students will live and share meals with Jordanian host families throughout their program. All families have been carefully screened by AMIDEAST Jordan, and families generally host two AMIDEAST students at a time. All host families are Arabic-speaking, however, some English is spoken in most of the homes.
