Program Overview
- Program Description:
The first of the Action AMIDEAST programs, Tunisia offers students the unparalleled opportunity to engage firsthand in the vibrant, post-revolutionary atmosphere of the country whose people ignited a revolution and continue to forge new, exemplary paths in society-state relations, equity and inclusion, entrepreneurship, community resilience, political life, arts and heritage preservation, sustainability, and development.
Students do not need prior Arabic study, knowledge of the region, or study abroad experience to participate in this program. Based on background, students will be placed with various organizations, from politics to civil society. Placements can be completed in English, French, or Arabic. In your free time, explore Tunisia’s marvelous ancient sites such as Carthage or El Jan, one of the world’s best preserved Roman Amphitheaters, soak up sun rays at one of Tunisia’s beaches on the Mediterranean sea, or catch a ride on a camel in Douz!
Action AMIDEAST in Tunisia is a six-week program based at AMIDEAST in cosmopolitan Tunis that includes:
A work placement of approximately 150 total hours with a Tunisian organization specialized in a field related to Tunisia’s post-revolutionary social, economic, and/or political life* (placements are available in English, French, or Arabic)
AMIDEAST Education Abroad’s Community-Based Learning (CBL) course, a 45 contact-hour course about contemporary Tunisia that helps students contextualize their worksite experiences
A front-loaded, 15 contact-hour crash course in Tunisian Arabic
Cultural activities, co-curricular activities, and an overnight excursion to a site of importance for Tunisia’s expansive cultural and natural heritage
Homestays with breakfast and dinner
24/7 support for health, safety, security, cultural adjustment, and academic issues
*Applicants should indicate three fields of professional/academic interest for potential worksite placements and submit a resume or CV. AMIDEAST does not guarantee placement in a first choice or particular field of interest, nor with any particular organization. AMIDEAST does its best to match participants with a worksite partner whose mission and workload closely aligns with students’ learning and experiential goals for participation in the program.
