Program Overview

Program Description:

Spend a semester or academic year in the city of St. Petersburg, Russia with AIFS! You’ll earn up to 18 credits per semester at Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University. Courses are taught in English or Russian with no previous Russian language study required.

AIFS can help you find various volunteer opportunities while you’re abroad in St. Petersburg. In the past, students have participated in a wide array of projects from working with animals to volunteering at the Hermitage, one of the most prestigious museums in the world.

Live in a Russian homestay or a student residence hall. Immerse yourself in Russian culture and language in one of a limited number of homestays or stay at a comfortable residence hall with other Russian and international students. During the first month, all students live in the residence hall to help make a comfortable adjustment to the Russian way of life. A meal allowance is built into your program fee to subsidize the cost of purchasing meals and groceries.

You’ll enjoy cultural and social activities such as guided city tours, visits to the many museums and cultural sites of St. Petersburg, a boat trip along St. Petersburg’s rivers and canals, and classical music, opera and ballet performances. A 3-day visit to Moscow is included in the program along with day trips to Catherine Palace at Pushkin, Peterhof, Novgorod and Pavlovsk.

An optional 3-day excursion to Helsinski, Finland, and Tallinn, Estonia, is also available. A 2-night tour of London, England en route to Russia and overnight stay on return to the U.S. are included for students on the AIFS Flight Package.

Setting Description:
St. Petersburg is known as both Russia’s “window to the West,” and the “Venice of the North,” for its open attitude and stunning canals, respectively. The city certainly has a European flair with its boulevards, canals and baroque architecture, yet offers students an authentic Russian experience.
